One of the most exciting things to do in Provincetown is to go on a Whale Watch that leaves from MacMillan Wharf. It really is a lot of fun if the whales and the weather cooperate. It is a lot of fun for the children if your children are old enough (5 and up?). Remember, this is about a 4 hour trip and there will be plenty of downtime so make sure you know what you are signing up for before you head out.
Some visitors have written that to get the most from the experience, especially with older children, have them do some research in advance so they know what they will be looking for and seeing. In this way, they will be actively engaged in the outing and will be able to talk with the marine biologists that are on board each boat.
You might want to bring some snacks for the kids. Those on board can be quite pricey and not that appetizing.
Also, before you commit, check around and find out if there really are good sightings. You do not want to spend the money and time to only see a whale in the far distance. You might ask at the Visitors Center on the wharf how good the sightings are because they will tell you the real situation. The last time I went, it was great. There were whales all over the place but I have heard from others, that that does not happen a lot of the time.
If you do decide to go, I would suggest going on one of the morning trips for several reasons:
1. You will arrive in Provincetown before most people and thus will have no problem parking. You can even park right there on the Wharf but prices there may be a bit high. Check it out and see what you find, especially if you are planning to stay for an extended period of time.
2. The mornings tend to be calmer on the water. Winds can pick up later in the day and the seas can become choppy and that’s not a lot of fun.
3. The mornings tend to be cooler and the sun is not as hot. After all, you are out on the water. Regardless of what the weather appears to be, bring warm clothes in case you need them and don’t forget the sunblock.
4. When you return, it will be time for lunch. My favorite restaurant is the Lobster Pot right on Commercial Street. The food is good and the prices are moderate.
Trips run from April to October. Among the companies running trips are Dolphin Fleet, 508 349 1900; Portuguese Princess, 508 487 2651; and Ranger V, 508 487 3322.
