From the department of “Why did no one think of this before”, Cape Cod and beer are finally joined. It was not as though the Cape was lacking in consumption of the ancient libation, especially in the summer months. It was lacking its own brand, its own identity. Todd and Beth Marcus have created a sorely missing aspect of the Cape Cod commercial repertoire.
The brewmaster, Todd, was the head brewer at the Hyport Brewing Company, which recently closed. Todd however continued to brew at the facility and to self distribute his beer around the mid-cape. This is no easy task. The beer market is a very competitive one. The big players in the game aim to squeeze the little guys out by a constant marketing barrage to the consumer (you and me) and an aggressive lean on retailers(bar and liquor store owners). They have been very successful at this strategy for a long time. However, the tide is beginning to turn, thanks to small brewers like Cape Cod Beer. Small brewers can compete by education and quality, rather than to the lowest common denominator. This is a fairly obvious marketing tactic, but like everything else, the devil is the details and execution. Cape Cod Beer has survived and grown in a very difficult beer market, which leads you to one conclusion: This is damn good beer. Cape Cod Beer currently has two year round offerings: Cape Cod Red and Cape Cod IPA. The Red is the more approachable of the two. It is very balanced and drinkable beer. (I’ll try not to expound too much on the intricacies of the flavor as I believe it is purely subjective) The IPA is much more bitter and has a very distinct, sharp taste. Both are excellent. They have had seasonal offerings like a porter, stout and even a summer hefeweizen. Cape Cod Beer is located at their brand spanking new brewery on Phinney’s Lane in Hyannis, right off the main drag of Route 132, off Exit 6. They are open for tastings and for purchasing “growlers” (a gallon of fresh draught beer) Wednesday through Sunday. Check their website for exact times and for special events. I highly recommend stopping by to try a pint at the brewery, or at least at your favorite Cape Cod watering hole. Cheers!
